Political Fallout Deepens as Representative Massie Presses for Hegseth’s Resignation or Impeachment
Washington — Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) has delivered a stark ultimatum to Pentagon Secretary Pete Hegseth, declaring he will force a House impeachment vote next week unless Hegseth steps down voluntarily.
Massie, who introduced eight articles of impeachment against Hegseth last September, stated that resignation is the sole condition under which he will withhold the resolution. The move comes in the wake of the midterm elections, which resulted in Democrats capturing majorities in both the House and the Senate.
The impeachment articles accuse Hegseth of executing extrajudicial actions, engaging in unauthorized military conflicts, and targeting a foreign leader.
A Party Divided After the Midterms
Massie’s ultimatum highlights growing internal friction within the GOP. Following Tuesday’s electoral losses, several Republican lawmakers and allies have privately pinned the party’s setback on the administration’s military strategy against Iran. Critics argue the campaign was launched without an exit strategy or a plan to manage domestic political consequences.
Despite the mounting pressure, President Donald Trump publicly stated Wednesday that he intends to keep Hegseth in his post. Even so, reports indicate the president has privately discussed potential successors with close allies.
Broader Political Speculation and Pushback
The controversy surrounding Hegseth is further complicated by rumors linking him to a potential appointment to a U.S. Senate seat in Tennessee, though a spokesperson has denied those claims.
Meanwhile, Democratic lawmakers and progressive groups continue to champion accountability measures. Rep. Yassamin Ansari (D-Ariz.), who filed separate articles of impeachment against Hegseth earlier in the year, renewed calls for his removal following the election results.
